Waveform Complexity in Teleseismic Broadband Sh Displacements: Slab Diffractions or Deep Mantle Reflections?
نویسنده
چکیده
Transverse component bodywave ground displacements from deep focus earthquakes exhibit complexities which are not accounted for by standard radially symmetric Earth models. This anomalous behavior is examined using 123 broadband teleseismic SH displacement recordings, reconstituted from shortand long-period or broadband seismograms for 11 events in the Kurile subduction zone. The greatest complexity, involving an extra arrival between the S and ScS phases at epicentral distances greater than 72 ø, has a strong distance dependence and little azimuthal variation with respect to the source region, favoring an interpretation as a deep mantle triplication rather than a near-source slab diffraction.

EVIDENCE OF A LOWER MANTLE SHEAR VELOCITY DISCONTINUITY IN S AND sS PHASES
Teleseismic recordings of direct S and sS body wave phases, and their core-reflected counterparts ScS and sScS, from intermediate and deep focus earthquakes are used to analyze the lowermost mantle shear velocity structure beneath Alaska. A model with a 2.75 % shear velocity increase 280 km above the core-mantle boundary accurately matches waveform complexities in both the S and sS wavetrains. ...
متن کاملJuan de Fuca subduction zone from a mixture of tomography and waveform modeling
[1] Seismic tomography images of the upper mantle structures beneath the Pacific Northwestern United States display a maze of high-velocity anomalies, many of which produce distorted waveforms evident in the USArray observations indicative of the Juan de Fuca (JdF) slab. The inferred location of the slab agrees quite well with existing contour lines defining the slab’s upper interface. Syntheti...
متن کاملWaveform Effects of a High-velocity, Subducted Slab
Creager and Jordan [1986] propose that penetration of subducting slabs under the Kurile Islands and other subduction zones to depths of at least 1000 km is necessary to explain travel time anomalies of deep earthquakes. Such penetration would also be expected to affect the amplitudes and waveforms of the body waves from earthquakes. Synthetic seismograms appropriate for a record section in a pl...
متن کاملMorphology of the Explorer–Juan de Fuca slab edge in northern Cascadia: Imaging plate capture at a ridge-trench-transform triple junction
The Explorer plate is a young oceanic microplate that accommodates relative motion between the Pacifi c, Juan de Fuca, and North America plates near northern Vancouver Island, Canada. The northern limit of Explorer plate–Juan de Fuca subduction and the fate of the slab in northern Cascadia are poorly understood. We use passive teleseismic recordings from an array of POLARIS broadband seismic st...
متن کاملCrust and upper mantle of Kamchatka from teleseismic receiver functions
Teleseismic receiver functions (RFs) from a yearlong broadband seismological experiment in Kamchatka reveal regional variations in the Moho, anisotropy in the supra-slab mantle wedge, and, along the eastern coast, Ps converted phases from the steeply dipping slab. We analyze both radialand transverse-component RFs in bin-averaged epicentral and backazimuthal sweeps, in order to detect Ps moveou...
